Your child’s self-confidence is the most important investment you will make this year. You know that self-confidence is the most fundamental character trait your child needs in order to succeed. A child with good self-confidence knows that he or she is capable of achieving anything. Further, this is recognized by other children who then become drawn to him or her as a leader. Children with low self-esteem get picked on far more by bullies, do more poorly in school, have problems developing and maintaining friendships, and succumb more easily to peer pressure.

The earlier on self-esteem is developed, the greater the likelihood of success in life.

The later on, the more difficult it becomes to internalize, and the more complex it becomes to reverse negative behavior. Like most parents, you want the best for your child early on: strength in character, and the true confidence to lead and not follow into the pitfalls of peer pressure at any stage.

And it takes a lot to be a leader. Mostly, it takes a really good start.

This is why we concentrate so much into the foundation of your child’s learning. With a strong foundation, potential is unlimited. With a poor foundation, castles, like futures, are built in the sand. At EDGE in order to develop the best we believe you have to start with the best. That is why as Chief Instructors, we hand pick each of our Instructors as a specialist in his or her area of expertise. As such, a Kung Fu Instructor won’t teach your child Judo, and a Judo Instructor won’t teach your child Tae Kwon Do. However, sound technical ability represents only one of many facets of a qualified Sensei (teacher), because martial arts for children require more than just clean kicks and punches. This is why when selecting a Sensei for your child, we also place heavy emphasis on their excellence both in character and personality. As such, in addition to teaching your child martial arts skills, they will be setting an example and mentoring your child in all aspects of how to be a complete person mentally and emotionally. It is in this way EDGE’s instructors teach your children essential life skills.

Remember when choosing a martial arts club,
there are many black belts, but only few real mentors.

Even though discipline and structure begin at home, at EDGE we recognize that not every parent has the time or energy to dedicate to the many demands placed on them, compelling them to turn to martial arts classes for their children. The effectiveness of the martial arts and a belt, stripe or sash system, is to help structure the development of motivation (and thus self-confidence and discipline) by breaking up goals into several achievable steps. This safe, structured, disciplined but fun environment, characteristic of a child’s martial arts class at EDGE, makes the setting and achieving of goals not only highly probable, but also enjoyable for all children.

Regular achievement in this way builds confidence, and this confidence then trickles to all aspects of a child’s life: school work, other sports, social connections, etc. Social skills are improved as the child has the confidence to interact with more people, self-discipline is reinforced through previous success, and character is developed while working through new challenges. Once a child starts to become good at something and their self-esteem grows, a positive feedback loop is created that simply feeds upon itself.

We focus on real achievements, not the illusion of success.
Real results, real confidence. At EDGE, we differentiate ourselves by developing true confidence stemming from real achievements. And in our case, we have a track record to back it up. False confidence is like a shell that is easily shattered. An individual or a child may appear confident, but it is in reality an illusion produced from an inferior training system.

But the most important lesson your child will learn at EDGE is that in martial arts, like in life, achievement is a function of discipline and of steady and constant effort. By learning how to break down goals into objective steps, your child feels that they can achieve anything and overcome any of life’s challenges.

Success Story (one of many):
"My 8 year old son Ron had an incident at school where he was held by another boy against his will. Unfortunately there were no teachers around to help him escape, he had another kid help him out. This incident got me very worried that he could not defend himself and that he was losing his self-confidence. Our decision was to sign up into Judo with Joel Gerson. Within less than 3 weeks, we noticed a big change in Ron's self- confidence. He is not worried now when older kids try to tease him and he is no longer intimidated by others. He loves attending Joel's classes. Joel is great with the kids. He teaches them discipline, respect, balance and gives them lots of confidence. The kids just love Joel and look up to him. We are very happy with the decision and grateful to Joel."
